Anat really sees these childres as complete human beings and that approach allows her to see what they CAN do now. When they actually get that message, they can respond to varying degrees, depending on the child.She has several videos on YouTube, so go there to get acquainted with her. One video she is talking to a group of parents giving info on how she approaches and contacts these children. She mentions the comments given about her techniques by Michael Merzenich who has appeared on PBS regarding brain plasticity. Anat was using that knowledge from her experience before it was so broadly accepted by most physicians.AND, chances are it will take time and consistency for a special needs child to move forward, Patience and acceptance from parents is critical to allow the best for these kids.
I love reading the "miracle stories" in this book--how kids begin to learn and grow because of certain things the author is able to introduce or do with the child. Anat Baniel explains her approach and how she discovered these neuromovement essentials. I think every parent with a special needs child should read this book! I have used many concepts with my neurotypical 7yo as well to help him work through his impulsiveness and anger issues. The concepts in this book are consistent with current psychology topics such as Growth Mindset, The Whole Brained Child, and Restorative Practices. I highly recommend it.
I am an ABM/NeuroMovement practitioner and work with children with special needs. I give this book to parents, teachers, TA's and therapists. This book is a wondeful resource to effectively support and drive the child's developmental process forward. I have received feedback from teachers and therapists, who expressed much appreciation for this book and said that when they began to use the nine principles, that drive neuroplasticity, in their work with the children they observed outcomes they did not see before. I highly recommend to buy Kids Beyond Limits and KEEP it, so you can go back to it and read a chapter again. The information in this book is easy to understand but in order to really assimilate all of it you will be doing well reading passages and chapters again ... and again.
My son has been getting the therapy since April 2013 on a regular basis with the practitioners certified by Anat Baniel, he was diagnosed with CP in early childhood,and in fact he has severe delay of development of his motor, speech and psychical skills, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. ABM became our main choice at the age of 7,5 when we have already tried a lot of other therapies, and we sticked to it as it brings a lot of benefits for his motor and psychological development. Also I found that it helped a lot to improve his hearing function as he suffers from central auditory processing disorder. I was very impressed after reading Anat's explanation about an autistic brain and its troubles at the website of ABM method. I am very grateful to Anat and all her staff and certified practitioners that they made this wonderful therapy and books available for us and our kids. Thank you very much!
Learning the miracle of the brain and opening new ways to see and fulfill our and our children’s potential as human beings was deeply inspiring. I’ve gone to a Feldenkrais practioner for years to address chronic pain issues... imagine my surprise to start to have options to how I saw myself, the stories of “why†I had invested in and that my brain had this amazing capacity to heal itself, to grow and to learn... cannot wait to bring this into my interactions with my grandchildren.
Our grandson has already benefited from this information, and each one of us within his care circle can contribute more and more to his success by practicing everything here - my favorite take away here is that every person is brilliant. We only need to know how to help our grandson access it.
While reading a review for another book, a mother recommended this one. I immediately got it on Kindle and was very happy I did. My son was just recently diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. One of the hardest things is waiting between doctor appointments to get answers and advice.Where this book helped was that it gave me some direction in approaching my son. The principles of this book will help anyone be a better parent or caregiver... regardless of whether or not the child has special needs.
This book makes Feldenkrais both understandable and practical without watering it down at all. As a parent of a normally developing child, I felt this book had much to teach me about children and their development in general, particularly about the need to give children all the time they need to reach their milestones and not to rush it in any way...
